The network was established as a result of a symposium on educational research on physical education, sport and leisure studies at the congress in Oslo in 2005. The first formal network was organised in Örebro 2006. This year, 25 abstracts were submitted to the network, of which all were accepted. 15 presentations were made at the congress in Copenhagen. Several of the cancelled presentations were due to late notification of acceptance from the conference secretariat, which made it difficult for the presenters to raise money from their respective university to finance travel to and participation in the conference.

The quality of the abstracts and presentations were high - probably the best quality since the network was established, and the presentations lead to a constructive discussion on educational issues in relation to physical education, sport and leisure time.

During the network discussion, the issue of long-term aims was discussed. From the beginning, the network has been dominated by Swedish researchers. Several Norwegian researchers participated in Oslo in 2005, several Finnish researchers participated in Turku last year, and this year several Danish researchers took part in the network. In order to establish a high quality long-term discussion about the research issues within the network, the network coordinator sincerely hope that more researchers within the field of physical education, sport and leisure studies choose NERA as one of their annually recurring conferences.

Several of the researchers in the network have established stable collaboration with British researchers within BERA:s (British Educational Research Association) network Physical education and sport pedagogy (annual congress in September).

In October 2007 a workshop on research methods and concepts, and theoretical approaches within research on physical education as a school subject was held in Umeå. This year, our plan is to have a similar workshop, on state of the art research in the same subject, in Stockholm.

Kind regards,

Håkan Larsson
Network organiser
