The Nordic Society for Philosophy of Education

Philosophy of education is an internationally well established field of knowledge that studies fundamental problems within educational practice and theory. In other words, philosophy of education addresses the problems specific to education that are philosophically either practical or theoretical. The area of practical philosophy questions the values and norms in upbringing and education. In addition, it questions what constitutes upbringing and education, including for example theories of practice, intersubjectivity, and competency. The area of theoretical philosophy of education is related to the nature, conditions, possibilities, legitimacies, and limits of education as a scientific discipline. At the intersection between the practical and the theoretical field of philosophy of education, there are fundamental problems related to the relation between educational theory and practice.

The Nordic society of philosophers of education is a society consisting of Nordic philosophers of education.

The purposes of the society are

  1. to foster dialogue among philosophers of education in the Nordic countries, as well as with other philosophy of education societies
  2. to coordinate, facilitate and support exchange of ideas, information and experiences in philosophy of education, to encourage joint and comparative research; to cooperate in publishing and in organizing meetings for in-depth discussions
  3. to recruit new participants to the field of philosophy of education
